What was google originally going to be called?

GOOGLE MENTIONED ON EACH SEARCH PAGE

In 1995, at Stanford University campus, Larry Page met Sergey Brin for the first time. They found each other unpleasant at that time. But soon they would be the founders of Search engine Giant Google. They both were interested in working on a research project  for improving search engines.

They named their research project ”Backrub”. Their research project was a success and created a buzz. To understand what difference their research project made in search engines; consider this example.

A query for “Stanford University” on existing search engines showed every link on web where ‘Stanford University’ has been mentioned. Whereas Backrub’s search results showed the homepage of University website in the first result.
The existing search engines could not able to index relevant search results in their top 10 results list. Searching on those search engines would have been awful experience.

The project was a hit but they did not find Backrub cool enough as well as they wanted a name which can represent the work they did. During a brainstorming session to decide the name, Googolplex has been advised, which Larry further shorten to googol. The word googol stands for numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. Larry and Sergey considered  it because it was a symbolic reference to the their project work as they also indexed millions of search results in a more relevant orders .While searching for the domain to register it ,it mistakenly got typed google. Both the founders liked the name instantly because it sounded more cooler than googol and concluded it to be the name of their startup.
