However Buchanan engaged Anne Caroline Coleman. She was the daughter of the wealthy iron manufacturing pioneer Robert Coleman.They could spend a little time together;Buchanan was extremely busy with his political projects during the Panic of 1819.Caroline broke off the engagement.Ironically she died suddenly soon afterward ,on December 9,1819. According to records of Dr.Chapman who looked after her in her final hours,commented just after her death that it was"the first instance he ever knew of hysteria producing death".
In a letter to her father, Buchanan asked to attend the funeral and wrote that "I feel happiness has fled from me forever".Coleman's father refused permission.
After Coleman's death, Buchanan never seemed to show any emotional or physical interest in another woman.
